Public Access and ‘Everyone’s Right’ in the Nordic Countries

This book explores the changing meanings of ‘everyone’s right,’ the Nordic principle granting public access to uncultivated land, regardless of ownership. It investigates what happens when custom, rooted in local needs, movement, and shared use, encounters the realities of a hyper-mobile world. People in these countries have long celebrated everyone’s right as a foundational principle of outdoor life and connection to nature. Yet growing tourism, environmental change, shifting rural economies, and increasing pressures on land have transformed the conditions under which this right is practiced, raising new questions about access, ownership, belonging, responsibility, and care. 

Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives and case studies from Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland, these contributors examine how everyone’s right is negotiated in a variety of landscapes, shaped by the likes of recreation, cultural heritage, Sámi land use, hospitality, and more. The volume reveals the tensions, conflicts, and ethical dilemmas that emerge when diverse people, livelihoods, histories, and species cohabit shared environments.
